The Tesla Model 3 Performance is an exceptional performing vehicle, it's fast, fun, and full of new tech. I took my Model 3 for a 2,000 mile road trip, and on that journey, all was going well. That is, until we hit a pothole. If you can believe it, a single pothole cost over $2,600 to fix, and required 7 hours of time from start to finish, leaving the Tesla service center.

While Tesla isn't to blame here, low profile tires are becoming the new trend, and they're not any good in my book. They're expensive, heavy, and cause ride quality to suffer, all for what some feel is improved aesthetics, and perhaps some slightly more responsive steering. But the Model 3 Performance only offers one wheel size, so tires with less than 2 inches between the wheel and the road are the only option. Do any of you have low profile tires? How has your experience been?

Thanks for watching everyone! Lots of pothole fans, this is great! I try not to have a negative vibe in my videos, but I think some frustration probably shined through in my tone on this one. Hope everyone is having a wonderful, pothole-free day!

Quick question: I ordered my Model 3 Performance, and while waiting for delivery I thought it was a good idea to buy winter rims+tires. I bought 19's in wheels, they are not going to fit?

Tesla could make a cooperation with Apple. Paint the car white, put a rotten bitten apple logo on it, strip out half the power and capacity, build in bottlenecks to corrupt the duration and charge twice the price for the car! The people and all the Hipsters would love it, cause it's so cool and trendy and hip and Jobs and Musk are so lovely persons, nearly as kind as Bezos! Oh God America, where have you come?

I highly suspect that this happened in autonomous mode?

Tesla cannot avoid potholes at this time. I know Tesla has been trying to patch this flaw, but teaching the Tesla exactly what objects that need to be avoided is tough with the technology it has, especially if you have potholes filled with rainwater.

The low profile tires are the number one reason I wouldn’t buy a Tesla. Low profiles are the most impractical tires ever made. I had them on a Honda once and experienced a similar expense after hitting a pothole. I learned my lesson very quickly. Tesla designers need to get a clue and provide practical tires and wheels. If the guy who made this video knew as much as he thinks he does, he would have known the drawbacks of low profile gangster wheels.

280$US for an alignment ? This is an absolute rip off ! In Montréal if you shop just a bit, there are alignment specialized garage that do it for about 100$CAD. Service fee is quite extremely expensive too ... Dealer are usually in the 120$/h and you get better price if you shop a little bit.

Granted though that most of the part of the price come from the wheels. Could you have went with 20in wheel aftermarket for less than 715$ each ?

715usd for stock pressure cast wheel? Seriously? For that amount you can get better wheels. BTW car geometry cost only 30usd in my country.

You can fit 18“ wheels on the Model 3 Performance. In swiss almost every Tesla model 3 Performance has 18“ winter wheels.

I have not been in a place to evaluate this but I think you are in error. Aluminum has a higher strength to weight ratio than rubber. I believe that the weight of the metal rim is less than the weight of the rubber tire that it is supporting. Therefore there is a net reduction in rotating mass if lower profile tires are used. If one looks at tests on a skid pad and especially overall performance on a track, higher profile tires perform better. My point is that cars are today often built with only the efficiency in mind and as you have discovered this often comes at a net loss of performance.

Low-Pro tires use less rubber that needs replaced, making them more environmentally favorable and should be less expensive to make, and more profit for the manufacturer!

Glad your reporting this, something to consider definitely and hopefully IF this is a real issue Tesla comes up with a brilliant idea how to resolve this problem... Like,.... WHY AREN't LOW PROFILE's AIRLESS! ? yes their heavy but if its LOW PROFILE then it MASS wouldn't be as much as a larger size wheel. HMMM THERES A GOODD VIDEO,,, TELSA WITH LOW PROFILE AIRLESS WHEELS MILEAGE VS regular low profile wheels... Not sure if you can even get those commercially anyways. (Tesla Can)

I needed to wait 4 weeks until original alloys arrive only after ringing BMW service daily to chase them. Claiming money to the council --- well maybe you get something back after 10 years. But to be fair, they fixed the pothole after I reported though only last around a month before the pothole appeared back again exactly at the same place !

Ridiculous how much you’re getting ripped off, those are some poorly built wheels. I had Japanese certified wheels with tires that had a smaller sidewall than yours and, was loaded and heavier than your car and it has stiff suspension and I hit a huge pothole that made me lose control and made the loudest sound because of how bad it hit and I was still able to drive home safely and when i took the wheel off it just had a tiny bend on the lip that looked like something that would happen if you hit a curb and my tires were perfectly fine and not busted up like yours

                                                                                    • Bizzmark

I think that this is *far* more telling of how dealerships commit heinous price gouging as a matter of daily business than anything else. I just bought 4 A/T LTs for $420 from a local mechanic, and he also replaced a rattling exhaust manifold & flange (Chevy 350 V8), total bill: $750. Yes, including the tires, mount & balance, labor, everything. I bought a set of OE-style rims (8-lug heavy-duty, too) from another local tire shop a few years back for $400 total, and got an alignment at the time from a national chain for $80.

Now, I'm not at all saying this is Jason's fault; if you're away from home, you probably don't have a choice, and roadside services often have deals with shops to direct people towards them. This is all part of the plan, and most car owners don't even know better. It's disgusting.
