The Tesla Model 3 Performance is an exceptional performing vehicle, it's fast, fun, and full of new tech. I took my Model 3 for a 2,000 mile road trip, and on that journey, all was going well. That is, until we hit a pothole. If you can believe it, a single pothole cost over $2,600 to fix, and required 7 hours of time from start to finish, leaving the Tesla service center.

While Tesla isn't to blame here, low profile tires are becoming the new trend, and they're not any good in my book. They're expensive, heavy, and cause ride quality to suffer, all for what some feel is improved aesthetics, and perhaps some slightly more responsive steering. But the Model 3 Performance only offers one wheel size, so tires with less than 2 inches between the wheel and the road are the only option. Do any of you have low profile tires? How has your experience been?

Thanks for watching everyone! Lots of pothole fans, this is great! I try not to have a negative vibe in my videos, but I think some frustration probably shined through in my tone on this one. Hope everyone is having a wonderful, pothole-free day!

If you don't care about cost but just want to experience potholes, come to Massachusetts. We've got years of practice creating them... both quantity and quality here are second to none. ;^)

The biggest problem is vehicle price. Not tires, tires are cheap to replace for high profile ones in comparison. $60k to drive <310 miles VS. $22k for 360 miles

Engineering Explained Tesla should be paying for that repair bill not the state. Does low profile tires clearly need to be a recall. If there’s one death in a tesla from someone hitting a pothole and having a car accident the owner of Tesla should be responsible for that person’s death.

this is what happens when you do not make your product strong enough to withstand something that is expected to happen during the life of the car...sure i expect the rim to possibly bend and the tire to bubble but not blow out the rim...

If you want comfort, small wheels and a decently fast car that doesnt go on track. Why didnt you just get the regular model 3?

"You can't fix potholes on the rain" A-HA-HA-HA-HA! You clearly aren't aware of the last technological advancements in Eastern Europe. This is being done all the time here in Romania. We have a special technique called: thievery of public money. Just search for "asfaltare pe ploaie" in Google Images. Marvel at our technological development.

Also, consider getting aftermarket wheels that are smaller with bigger sidewall on tires. It can make car look better and feel better when you gonna hit pothole next time ;)

I think Tesla should incorporate a system using a forward looking camera to sense a pothole and drive around it. They could also record the location of it and send the info to the state or city officials.

You could have gotten the factory wheels and tires at NTB for 600 per or 1200 for 2 tires and wheels.

This was the most disappointing video you have done. As a professional driver, you hit a pot hole: you are responsible - not the state.

As a truck driver, I dodge potholes while remaining in my lane. The analysis is based on the faulty assumption the driver is perfect. As no other car was damaged in 100 minutes, that means the pilot is the cause.

Being an engineering channel, you could examine what could have been the cause. In this situation, the reaction time is determined by following distance. Industry states .5 seconds response time for pnumatic breaks (.25 for hydrolic). Applying breaks with a 2 second following distance should greatly reduce speed.

Yes, crashing and doing $3000 dollars of damage sucks; be glad the unsafe driving (be it inattention or tailgating) wasn't much worse
