Here's Why the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Is an Awesome Midsize Truck

  • Published: 09 July 2019

The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is an awesome midsize truck. Today I'm reviewing this Tacoma TRD Pro to explain why, and I'm going to show you all around this Tacoma TRD Pro. Then I'm going to drive the Tacoma TRD Pro to explain how it handles on the road.

FYI - I accidentally left off the Jeep Gladiator from the DougScoring at the end. I prefer the Gladiator over the Tacoma TRD Pro, and the Gladiator has a higher DougScore (24 + 33 = 57); I simply forgot about the Jeep when I was scoring the Tacoma.

The Tacoma would out live the jeep no problem

Just found and subscribed to your channel a couple days ago. Dude, you know your stuff. I've been binge watching all your car videos this whole time haha. THANK YOU for doing the Tacoma too btw. I've been thinking about getting this truck. Also I'm a addicted to all your super/exotic car reviews. They're the best.

I wish Doug had commented on Toyota's decision to put rear DRUM brakes on this truck. Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist but drum brakes. What was Toyota thinking? Or, maybe they weren't.

The crawl control, is on the TRD Off Road also. Not just the pro. The tires that come on the Pro are not off road tires, they’re more like Highway Terrains. When you don’t have the JBL sound system you have the storage space behind the seats. I would know. I have a 2019 TRD Off Road. I love it. It has everything the pro has, just different suspension and no pro badging. But that doesn’t matter when you actually off road your truck. You switch out the suspension.

Not worth.. get the off-road version instead. People who buy the PRO end up changing suspension wheels, tires, rock sliders etc.

I guess my only quibble with Doug here is the reliability rating of 7. Nothing is perfect but how can you go below 9?

Toyota needs to get this V6 to at least 300 ft lb. That is the only serious issue with this truck.....and/or maybe the gearing.

ECT PWR it makes the transmission faster and less jerky so that when you haul loads the truck doesn’t shake when the gears shift

So in your scoring you are placing "styling" or "fun factor" on par with reliability? Your joking, right? I would rather have an ugly truck that won't strand me in the middle of nowhere, than a great looking trunk that I have in the shop every 6 months. Case in point: Years ago I bought a new 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. It was not my main "drive to work" vehicle. In 4 years I put 16K miles on it. That's 4K a year. It WAS in the shop every 6 months! At 7K miles the ignition relay crapped out and stranded me on a Sunday afternoon IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE and out of range of cell phone service. Yes, I will take reliability over styling any day.

I like old school. Why all the new tech? I don't need automatic braking because I know enough to stop if there is something in front of me. Maybe because I don't play with my iPhone while I am driving. And I like key type start. Not the silly push button. While were at it, get rid of the auto lane departure and radar pacing cruise control. And voice recognition is equally stupid.

To each his own tho, all good. As for me the current drive train package is weak and if you search all the forums I am not alone in saying that. Boggles my mind how many more Tacos Toyota could sell if they offered that drive train, and that's all I am saying. Don't do away with the current one cause it does have a following but at LEAST offer another drive train for the many that want something different. It would sell and you know it. Peace.
