  • A wheel of parmesan cheese can cost over $1,000. A single wheel takes at least one year to age, 131 gallons of milk to make, and it can only be made in a restricted area in northern Italy, in the region of Emilia Romagna. We visited a dairy in Parma, Italy to find out how the cheese is made and why it is so expensive.

        Well, the high price comes from greed that it essential ingredient of this cheese.
        >It requires three bacteria specific only to one region, so it can't be made anywhere else.
        >There is a problem with counterfeit cheese in the world.
        So essentially it can be made anywhere knowing which bacteria has to be used (not counting counterfeit which is completely different). It's simply not allowed because of law.
        It's like saying that corn is extremely expensive and can only be grown in one country. Why? Because they all agreed that no one else will do that.


        I think it has perfect balance right now. I bought Parmegiano Regano quite often (I use it mostly as spice) but I also tried other Parmesan. It's similar, for some use it's even better to buy more cheaper "counterfeit" Parmesan than go on with original one with the same price (and less amount). Parmesan right now is just kind of cheese and Parmegiano Regano is exactly trademarked product from this region. That's how it should be. One should not forbid making anything in other place, it just has to be properly signed so you can distinguish Parmegiano from Asia and Parmegiano from Italy.

                        The protected origin is more of a seal of quality for the cheese products in Europe. They don't want shoddy counterfeit cheese to be recognized as italian-made, kinda like how Australia bans cow imports from other countries to dissociate themselves from shoddy foreign beef.

                                                      Whats with them saying that it can "only" be made in a certain area of Italy? It's completely false and I'm 100% positive there are hundreds of other parmesan cheese factories outside of Italy.

                                                                        I AM SORRY BUT I FIND IT HIGHLY DISGUSTING THAT THEY ARE NOT USING THINGS TO MAKE THE WHOLE PROCESS MUCH MORE HYGIENIC THAN WHATEVER IT CURRENTLY MIGHT BE !!!!
